Let’s talk of fear.
The fear you feel right now. Or the fear you refuse to feel right now.
The fear that wakes you up and keeps you up at night.
The fear swooshing and swirling through your body and tightening under your skin.
Let’s talk of it so we can soothe it. So we can cradle it sweetly and then lay it down for an everlasting long winter’s nap.
For fear is not what’s needed now. Because fear is what brought us here, to this place where we’re divided, angry, irrational, bewildered.
And so very, very afraid.
No matter what you believe or think about the recent election in the United States, no matter how you voted, or whether you voted at all, you cannot help but notice the level of fear is intense. Even if you’re happy with the results because your chosen candidate won, look around you.
Your brothers and sisters are swimming in fear, trying to stay afloat, wondering if they will ever see dry land.
Let’s talk of fear and then help each other let it go. For fear only serves to handicap your capacity to know the love, peace, clarity and divine inspiration of your truest self – that infinite, reliable part of yourself that only knows well-being, connection, safety, peace and joy. You can call it your soul, spirit, God, Universe, Source, Divine Love… whatever. It doesn’t matter what you call it. What does matter is you get what you need to connect with it, know it, live from it. As best you can.
Fear is a story you’re telling yourself. That the polar bears will all die. That civil rights will be obliterated. That hatred will reign. The more you feed the story of fear, the more you invest in its power and encourage its manifestations.
So, let’s talk of fear and then let’s stop. And instead, focus our attention, words, energy, hearts, minds and everything we’ve got to creating what we want to see in the world. Let’s stop pushing against what we fear, for doing so only makes it stronger, more aggressive and destined to continue.
Let’s stop all the pushing against and instead channel that energy, that determination, that desire into creating what we do want.
What do you want to create now?
What do you want to see in the world?
Don’t tell me what you hate, dislike, can’t stand. Speak of what you want to create.
Let’s talk of words.
And the power they have to create, convince, and ignite people’s desires, fears and hopes for what’s possible.
For words won this election. Trump spoke the words that reached and resonated with half of this country. His words had power because they spoke directly to the fears, desires and the denied, darker beliefs inside so many. His words only had power because they were the words people wanted or even needed to hear.
Because of his words, people were willing to overlook his bigotry, his misogyny, and (perhaps most importantly) his complete and utter lack of qualifications for the job of President. None of that mattered. Because he had the right words. The right message. A message that resonated with their own thoughts, feelings, fears, desires and suspicions.
So, let’s talk of your words.
They have no less power than Trump’s. They, too, can convince, inspire, ignite, liberate and inflame. But only if your words resonate with what is already simmering and stewing in the hearts and minds of your tribe. Only if your words speak to what your tribe is already thinking, feeling, believing. Or wanting to believe.
Remember this when writing to your peeps. You have the power to affect great positive change with your words, but only if you know what your tribe is thinking, feeling and wanting to hear.
We all carry fear. We all carry love. We all have the capacity to be generous, forgiving, loving, caring. Your words can ignite people’s fear if you speak of what is fearful. Your words can ignite people’s confidence in what’s possible if you speak of your belief in their ability to make it happen.
You can use your words to uplift, inspire and connect. OrĀ your can incite a riot that destroys, damages and divides. You can use your words to liberate people’s love, kindness and belief in Something Greater. Or you can use them to perpetuate more fear.
Let’s talk of Love.
The unconditional kind. The Love that melts our judgements, differences, criticisms, and our need to be right. The Love that is the pure essence of who we are. For this is the Love that’s required here. This is the only Love that will do.
To access it and bring it forth, you need to be willing to let go of your stories about who’s right and who’s wrong. Your stories of impending doom. Your stories of us and them, him and her, and all of that inflammatory, divisive, war-inciting nonsense.
Let go of the stories and hold tight to Love.
When you’re drowning in fear and gasping for breath, when nothing seems to make sense and everything appears ugly, distorted, and wrong, give yourself over to Love. Align yourself and your words and your actions and even your non-action with this Love. Let go of your small human stories (you can do it) and decide to see the world as Love sees it.
So… no more talk of fear.
Instead, let’s commit all of our energy, action and words – our powerful, powerful words – to the service of Love. Let’s give our focus to what we want, not what we fear or despise. Let’s talk about of what’s possible and use our words to reach out, uplift, inspire, heal, comfort… and lead people home to Love.
