A few blocks from my house, there used to be a costume shop. A big one. With 3-floors worth of elaborate costumes, makeup, props and more. In the back on the ground floor, there was a wide assortment of wigs of different lengths, colors and styles. Neon purple shags, copper penny bobs, long bright-white curls. They called to me.
One day, I went in to try on a few of those crazy colorful wigs, just for fun. A stout, brown-haired woman with weary eyes waited on me. She asked me to sit down in front of a mirror while she picked out the wigs she thought would complement my skin color. I told her, “I want something wild. Something loud. Something fun!”
She brought me a nice selection, showed me how to tuck my real hair into a wig cap, and taught me how to put on a wig for the best look and fit. And while she wanted me to buy the more subdued auburn wig, I went with the bright copper bob. It made me feel… reckless. Dangerous. And a little bit naughty.
The whole experience was so fun and kind of crazy that when I got home, I called my friend Diane and told her all about it. I told her how amazing it was to see myself transformed by a different head of hair, how I couldn’t wait to go incognito in my bright penny wig, and how much she would love the experience too.
My excitement and exuberance got her revved up and excited as well. She was curious. And even a bit envious. She wanted a wig, too!
“I’ll go with you,” I said. “I’ll help you decide. And who knows? Maybe I’ll buy another one.”
In one phone conversation, my friend went from zero desire to own a wig to craving one. Simply because I shared my excitement over my experience and my confidence that she too would love the flirty, playful fun of being transformed and set free by a stylized mop of synthetic fibers. She went from apathetic to “I gotta have it!”
So… are you sharing your excitement?
When you talk or write to your potential clients, do you share your excitement for what you offer? Can they feel your passion and desire to give them an experience that will transform something in their lives? Do you communicate with them as you would a dear friend when you’ve discovered something thrilling?
If not, why not?
Your excitement for what you do and offer is contagious, convincing and confidence-building. Especially when it comes from your sincere desire to be of service and give your clients something that will delight them. Your energy, your enthusiasm, will flow through your words, and your copy or conversation will take on a magical magnetism and emotional authority that is enthralling.
And perhaps even a little bit enchanting.
A few weeks ago, I was talking to a mentor of mine about a copywriting project we were working on. In 10 minutes, she had me signed up for her new, year-long Mastermind program, a program I’d decided not to participate in because of all the usual reasons. Time. Money. Overwhelm.
But when I experienced her excitement for the program, and her confidence in how this experience would be perfect for me, I immediately said, “Sign me up.” Granted, I trust this woman completely. But I trusted her weeks before when I’d decided not to be in her Mastermind. It was her excitement and certainty that this Mastermind was IT for me that turned me around.
Just like I convinced my friend Diane that she would love a wig buying experience, my mentor convinced me. With her excitement.
Don’t be afraid to express your excitement, passion and confidence when you’ve got something to share that could help your clients. Let that excitement inspire you as you write your copy or speak to your potential clients. Tell them how thrilled you are about what you’ve got going on because you know they’re going to be excited by it as well.
Now… this only works if you’re genuinely excited by what you’ve got to offer and you believe it will knock your clients’ socks off. So, take your own temperature and see… how hot and excited are you really when it comes to what you’ve got to offer? If you’re feeling a little lukewarm, if your excite-o-meter isn’t at an all time high, you may need to tweak your offer until it thrills you.
Or you may need to change the way you’re thinking about it.
Because, hello! Your services, products and message are worth getting excited about! Your offers can change people’s lives. What you bring to the world is exactly what your perfect clients need and want… even if they don’t know it yet.
And that’s exciting! Right?
I think sometimes when you’re writing copy or trying to express the value of what you offer, you damp down your excitement. As if it’s not appropriate. Or you believe it will be seen as pushy or hypey or beside the point. That you won’t be as clear or as credible if you verbally jump up and down and express your genuine excitement about what you offer and what it can do for your peeps.
Well, stop that!
Your excitement is contagious, engaging and influential. It’s full of your positive energy and confidence and conviction. Let it out! Let that energy be expressed! Through your words and in your copy.
On Saturday, September 9, at 12:00 pm ET, I’ll be sharing one of my favorite ways to tap into your natural excitement and channel it into your copy during my free webinar, Write to the Heart: A 5-step Formula for Writing Copy that Connects and Converts. What excites ME about this formula is that it’s sure to make it easy and even exhilerating for you to write clear, compelling copy that cuts through the noise and speaks to the heart and soul of your client. Copy that sounds like you! Copy that express your message, your excitement, and your desire to serve while staying true to your authentic voice.
Until then, your assignment is to play this song, put it on repeat, and go crazy as you sing the refrain, “I’m so excited! And I just can’t hide it!” Queue it up, dance, and sing!
