So… are you tired of people wishing you a Happy New Year?
No?
Okay, then…
Happy New Year! I hope it’s your most rich, wondrous and rewarding year ever!
And to help you make it even more magical and magnificent, let me grab you by the hand, pull you into my imaginary time machine, and take you to December, 2014.
Oh, come on! It’ll be fun. I promise.
We’re going to travel forward to Christmas Eve, 2014.
This “new” year is coming to a close, and you’re sitting in a cozy chair, sipping something delicious and reflecting back on all that has happened in 2014.
You take out a pad of paper and a pen (or you open your laptop) and you start to write about all the achievements, experiences, delightful surprises and unprecedented triumphs you experienced in 2014. From how your business evolved, to the people you met, to the vacations you took, to the goals you achieved and the expectations you exceeded… any and every thing that made your year glorious and grand.
Okay, try it now.
Transport yourself to the end of 2014. Pretend you’re sitting in that favorite spot of yours, looking back over this new year, and you’re filled with joy, appreciation and delight by all you’ve experienced and enjoyed.
- What would you write?
- What DO you want to experience this year?
- What feels important and meaningful to you?
- What would make you incredible happy?
This is one of my favorite New Year’s rituals.
As I explained above, I imagine I’m at the end of this brand new year, and I envision how I want to feel, where I want to be, and what I want to have accomplished, experienced and achieved. And I write it down as if it’s already happened, as if it IS December 24, 2014, and I’ve had the most rich and rewarding year ever.
What I love about this ritual is that, unlike making a list of goals or resolutions or have-to’s, it often reveals what’s really important to me.
I’m sometimes surprised by what I write. I discover that finishing the book I’ve been writing feels more important and rewarding to me than doubling my income. I realize that finding a new, perfect place to live is so much more delicious than a cruise to the east coast of Canada.
You, too, may be surprised by what rises from deep inside of you and onto the page as you write about how 2014 was your most amazing, deeply satisfying year.
So, take my hand, and let’s leap to the end of 2014. Give yourself 30 minutes or so for this little trip into the future. Write down all the wonderful, rewarding and enriching experiences you’re going to have in 2014 as if they’ve already happened.
This is your vision for this new year. And I hope it brings you everything you desire and more. Much more.
